Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
