Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
