The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show nears, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
